STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Drew Allar took matters into his own hands on Wednesday.

A few minutes before Allar was set to throw in front of scouts and executives from teams across the NFL, for the final time before next month’s draft, the former No. 1 overall quarterback from his recruiting class chatted with noted passing coach John Beck as he went through his warm-ups.

That would be just about all the input Beck would have for the rest of the day.

When Allar stepped to the 30-yard line to begin his throwing session, the big-armed six-foot-five and 235-pound quarterback was the one directing his teammates, running back Kaytron Allen, wide receivers Kyron Hudson and Trebor Pena, on what routes to run, dictating the script of his last chance to make an impression on teams starving for quarterback depth to emerge in this year’s class.

“John Beck helped me put together the script,” Allar said afterwards. “And then, really, it was things that he knew teams would want to see from me. But, it was also me putting together the script. He’d have the script in hand, tell me what everybody had.”

Allar, who came an interception short of guiding the Nittany Lions to a National Championship Game appearance in 2024, returned for the 2025 season, only to see the program’s campaign come off the rails before his own season ended due to an ankle injury, after just six games, never quite met the expectations placed on him when he first walked through the doors of the Lasch Building and onto the practice field at Holuba Hall as a true freshman in 2022.

Wednesday, though, the ball jumped out of Allar’s hands on the short and intermediate routes.

Allar and Hudson had a couple of strong connections on out-routes to the sideline.

But, the vertical throws deep downfield were the kind of mixed bag that came to define his collegiate career in Happy Valley.

Early in his throwing session, Allar sailed a moon ball about two yards past Pena, deep downfield.

However, later, Allar bounced back and hit Pena, the former Syracuse star who transferred to Penn State to chase a championship last season, in stride for a beautiful deep pass that traveled at least 55 air yards.

It was the full four-year Drew Allar experience summed up in 20 minutes, but designed by the Nittany Lions quarterback around what he’s heard from teams during the pre-draft process.

“My game plan was just to come out here and just show teams what I can do from a throwing standpoint,” said Allar. “Really was just to kind of showcase a lot of different things out of either put on tape, or at the next level that you see a lot on Sundays.”

Allar stepped onto the field last September in Penn State’s season opener against Nevada, in the conversation as a potential top-five selection and top quarterback in this class.

After three straight losses to Oregon, UCLA, and Northwestern altered the entire trajectory of Penn State’s season and re-underwrote Allar’s draft stock, he stood on Wednesday unburdened by expectations, with a clear vision for what he hoped to show teams from the Combine, through Pro Day and the top-30 on-site visits with teams that now litter his schedule over the next month.

“I would say I’m a competitor,” Allar said, when asked by Between The Hashmarks, what he hopes teams take away from their time with him before the draft. “Whenever there’s a chance to throw, I’m going to throw. I will throw seven times a week if I could for every team in the league, so that’s just how I am.

“I’ve always been wired like that, and [I’m] just trying to show teams my work ethic through my rehab process.”

Allar was the headliner, but he wasn't the only prospect with something to prove Wednesday in Happy Valley.

Workout Notes

  • Wide Receiver Devonte Ross turned heads during the broad jump, posting a 10-foot-8 jump, which would have placed him ninth among all receiver prospects at the NFL Combine. Earlier, before the media was permitted access, the 5-foot-9 pass catcher posted a program-best 36-inch vertical leap, which would have placed 18th in Indianapolis.

  • Safety Zakee Wheatley turned heads among several scouts in attendance, when he ran the short-shuttle in 4.1 seconds, which would have put him in the mix with Arizona’s Genesis Smith as the top-performing safety at the NFL Combine. Wheatley might have had the strongest overall workout of the day, running the 40-yard dash in 4.62 seconds.

Several Nittany Lions Reveal Visits

Penn State edge rusher Dani Dennis-Sutton is the Nittany Lion to watch, who could hear his name called significantly earlier than many expect, and sources tell Between The Hashmarks that he is rising up boards for several teams since a standout showing in Indianapolis.

Wednesday, Dennis-Sutton spent several minutes chatting with a scout from the Green Bay Packers, who could see the explosive 6-foot-5 and 265-pound edge presence as a replacement for Rashan Gary, who was recently traded to the Dallas Cowboys.

Dennis-Sutton posted 8.5 sacks in each of the past two seasons and produced a 90-plus overall PFF grade in each of the past three years, numbers that have some scouts suggesting he could be chosen as early as the late-first or early second-round.

His day was limited to some on-field position drills, and afterward, Dennis-Sutton revealed he has top-30 visits scheduled with the Philadelphia Eagles and Baltimore Ravens in the days ahead.

The Nittany Lion most likely to hear his name called in the first round of next month’s draft by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, is guard Vega Ioane.

It’s no surprise that Ioane is drawing significant interest from just about every team in the NFL, and he said Wednesday that he has a top-30 visit scheduled with the Philadelphia Eagles, who recently signed guard Landon Dickerson to a long-term contract extension.

All-American center (and fellow Parkland High School alum) Nick Dawkins tells Between The Hashmarks that he has been invited to, and will participate in, the New York Giants’ Local Pro Day, and has a visit upcoming with the New York Jets, as well.

Dawkins, one of the program’s strongest leadership presences throughout his career, is looking to bolster his draft stock in the weeks ahead.

Meanwhile, Nick Singleton suffered a foot injury that kept him from working out either in Indianapolis or at Penn State’s Pro Day, but revealed afterwards that he has a top-30 visit lined up this weekend with the New York Jets.

Additionally, Singleton says that the Indianapolis Colts, Atlanta Falcons, and Detroit Lions are the three teams that stand out as having shown the most interest in him, so far, during the pre-draft process.
